Escape Poem by Marilyn Colyer

Escape

My mind is thick with fog, my hands rough and bruised
Scratching and climbing to find a way out
Scraping along trying to survive in the darkness
Nothing in the moment but pain and loneliness
I see a faint light in the distant and I pray that it’s you
My hope, my clarity, my destiny
I look up to see your face, the warmth and your kind eyes
The fog starts to lift from my mind
I cry out as hard as I can not sure if you hear me
Your hand reaches down to embrace mine
The heat and kindness in that moment awakens my heart
I forget where I am only focused on you
Forced to feel something more than darkness and pain
Your smile lights up the sky and I finally see
You pull me closer until my lips feel your breath
And in that moment I know I’m safe
A love that grows forever more in my heart
Love the word I never thought I would find
But in this moment I know that this is real
And never will I be alone again.
