Even As I Hold You - (Revised) Poem by Alanna Flynn

Even As I Hold You - (Revised)

Even as I hold you
I don’t feel close enough.
I think of you as someone gone when
I’m without your touch.
Sometimes you feel far, far away. Your eyes
The color of sky,
That rests before the long drive ahead.
Your lips stick to mine like pennies in a bowl
Of dark honey.
Your words, always bringing sweet light to someone else,
Especially me, in times of need.
Your dark hair slipping through my fingers.
I try to hold on, for I’d be lost without you.
Soon all I see is a flash of your body going left when
Mine is going right.
My heart moves forward, as yours hides around a corner.
I hate to see your smile,
Breaking before me.
One simple kiss might mend this hurtful feeling.
The flippant last turn of what we though was love.
The hinges of a revolving door,
Swing back and forth.
Emptying you out,
Changed,
Bitter, and lost.
How can you move away from me?
After all that’s been said, and the time that we’ve spent...
Even as I hold you,
I am letting go.
