Fall Of 2004 Poem by Lindsay King

Fall Of 2004

i remember you
from what seems like 10 years ago
although it was only a lifetime ago
don't you know
the fall of 2004
you looked like god then
not a peasant
that was back
when i thought sacramento was a godsend
and yeah
maybe it was
and yeah
maybe you were
and oh yeah,
i had no idea
how to rationalize
the things i had done
and what you had not
i remember you
kissing me in the spare bedroom
we tasted like liquor and some bad cigarettes
oh wait, i don't smoke
i had wanted you for quite some time
now this was to be
the fall of 2004
i thought you were someone famous
here to take me away
i'd have been smacked in the face
had i asked you to name this
a kiss can't be a harmless crime
and yeah,
maybe it was
and yeah,
maybe you were
and oh yeah,
i had no idea
how to make you into something permanent
when the next day
was the one you went away
i remember you
from what seems like 10 years ago
and maybe it should have been
i wanted more
only you wanted less
you kissed me softly
said you'd like me better
had i undressed
you wouldn't give me your number
you wouldn't give me your myspace
you turned and walked away
from that place and from me
it was the fall of 2004
and it was the end of it, too
