Farmers Prayer Poem by Joshua Bozarth

Farmers Prayer

I wake up before dawn
A plow pierces the ground before me
I begin to dream awake
When I’m dead and gone
What will be my story
I know I must go
To join my kings army
So when I have fallen
My father will be proud
Knowing his son died for glory

If there is a dragon to slay
That causes castles to crumble
Then I will take up arms
I have a princess to save
Because I took an oath
To defend her from harm
My actions alone
Will bring kings to their knees
Teaching them to be humble
I must join
A war that was waged
On a side that can’t win
Sun reflecting off my armor
On a valiant steed I ride
As a Knight, Not a farmer
Father forgive my sins
While I defend our honor

Villages Burning
The flames are astounding
Attacked in the night
These poor families
Only knew labor
Not how to fight
The innocent screams
Begin to surround me
A mother she begs
I know what she needs
A child to save
The darkness consuming
I feel like I’m drowning
Shaking I say
I can’t stop the bleeding
She looks towards the heavens
Starting to pray
I hold her close
It’s too late
The heart has stopped beating
I swear they will pay
Tears keep falling
She curses the gods
As we dig a small grave
And bury her baby

My men gather around
As I preach of courage
When no hope is found
Over half the men lay at rest
Their swords in the ground
We have become greatly outnumbered
Then men ask why we fight
I respond we are knights
Whatever the answer
It doesn’t matter
Sit by the fire
Write your last letter
Tonight we will drink
Tomorrow we will die

If there is a dragon to slay
That causes castles to crumble
Then I will take up arms
I have princess to save
Because I took an oath
To defend her from harm
My actions alone
Will bring kings to their knees
Teaching them to be humble
I must join
A war that was waged
On a side that can’t win
Sun reflecting off my armor
On a valiant steed I ride
As a Knight, Not a farmer
Father forgive my sins
While I defend our honor

Here we few march upon a sea
Waves and waves of enemies
Brothers I scream
Leave you fear behind
Even if our story ends
They will bleed
This is out time
Memories of the fallen
Fuel our rage
The pace increases speed
Swords held high
Shield at the ready
Hands that used to tremble
Now become steady
We begin to run
Finally we are free
I hear my heart pounding
Feeling the drums sounding
Times slows and we collide
Slowly moving forward
Painting the ground red
Friend and foe
Behind lay dead
Another wave
Comes crashing ahead
Close the ranks
Yet we are breaking
I pray angels save me
Pulling an arrow from my chest
Before my eyes the last man falls
Then I know
Heaven won’t take me
I have created violence
An unforgivable mess
