Fate Interrupts Destiny Poem by Sanjana Swaroop

Fate Interrupts Destiny

I read a theory of cosmology and it told me
I am made up of atoms that have existed since the beginning of time.
So believe me when I tell you that my love for you is ancient and infinite.
It burns brightly in the stars faraway;
It is the storm on Jupiter;
It trails the galaxy like a lost comet.
Returning, re-returning to you, like
Haley's comet visits the Earth every so season.

Can you feel the tingle in your body every time we meet?
No, they are not butterflies or nerves or
anything else the world has tried to define and condense.
Believe me when I tell you that I have
tested each theory and shrugged every realisation.
Inexplicably, my observations tell me that
That sensation is each molecule in my body,
Suddenly awake, aligning themselves in anticipation
Of an embrace, a touch.
But you're afraid our chemistry is volatile.
Mixed together, we would combust, brightly but furiously, you say.

How do I tell you that I have mapped a universe in you?
I have connected the beauty spots on your body and found constellations.
Let me cross over, like the sun travelling among the zodiac,
From Libra into Capricorn.
Meet me at the horizon over Virgo.
I could show you empirical evidence
That it was a big bright explosion
Which created our universe.
But you've dismissed our esoteric love as infatuation.

You used to be a believer; I remember our conversations, dreaming of travelling
to cities nearby, countries faraway, beyond galaxies,
in time gone by and in future yet to come.
Then suddenly, a slight temporal shift in your deep sea tectonic plate
Which caused a tsunami in my emotional hemisphere.
You stood there, unaware as I drowned in this surge of unexpressed love.

We are destined to be together and yet fated never to be so.
Like a binary star system,
we are two lost stars in this infinite galaxy.
Unable to escape each others gravitational pull;
Insulated from the world when locked in your gaze.
Forever dancing across time and space in this endless ball
But never getting our happily ever after.
