Five Years Poem by William B. Deutscher

Five Years

Five years of childhood,
Elusive blinking snapshot memories,
No world except the confines
Of my own limited experience;
Those one or two false aunts,
Day babysitters, paid by the hour,
That looming car in the garage, my first,
And some kid who injured himself one night
Swimming in the public pool,
Well! So here I was, all of a sudden,
Accepting as pure fact
What until recently did not exist,
For me, at any rate.
