For Many The Struggle Poem by Francis Duggan

For Many The Struggle

For many the struggle is just to survive
And many feel lucky just to be alive
In Burma from a recent cyclone thousands of people have died
By Nature the breath of life of them denied.

For many to live 'tis a struggle enough
Poor and homeless and hungry living and sleeping rough
It seems a long way to success and renown
For those who are born in the wrong side of town.

That all people are equal is surely a lie
In earthquakes and cyclones 'tis the poor who mostly die
Even Nature herself does not treat the poor well
She can make life for them worse than Earthly hell.

In Burma from a cyclone many thousands are dead
And for the survivors many tough years ahead
I bet you amongst the disaster victims not many wealthy to be found
Where the poor do reside unsafe dwellings abound.
