For My Lost Friend Poem by grace mariner

For My Lost Friend

We danced together in that long ago place.
A moment in time can last a lifetime,
as if the dance never ended.
The music of our time together still echoes
and the image of you, of us then, remains clear.
It is untarnished and easily retrieved.
We evolved but remain unchanged in my
memory of you.
We did what was expected.
We grew up and became too large for that little
piece of paradise youth afforded us.
And these many years later I learn that you have
flown away, taken by the angels, even as I searched
for you.
Too late it seems to see you again in this cellular world.
But I see you still.
That dance never ended.
You are still on the dance floor with me...
young, tall and slender, a quietly burning flame.
We will always be, you and I.
Cancer took you too soon from us, but you remain safe
in my arms, dancing to the soundtrack of our lives.
