Forever Friends? Poem by Lucky You

Forever Friends?

You tell me we’ll be friends forever,
But that seems to change like the weather.
You give me a hug, then walk away,
But linger at my side the next day.
I’m so confused by your actions,
Sometimes I wish your thoughts had captions.
When you hear bad things about me and side with my foe,
Then you might as well have shot me with a bow.
I see you. I smile and wave,
But you walk right through me, like I’m an endless cave.
I tell you a joke and you laugh,
Only to be left alone like an abandoned calf.
I wait to hear your voice,
Because then I can finally rejoice.
But when you called,
I started to bawl.
No kind words were said,
So I go and cry on my bed.
Tomorrow I will smile,
Only to receive a look that’s vile.
In the evening I will wait,
Hoping you won’t cast any nasty bait.
I swallow my butterflies and pick up the phone,
Hoping to hear you moan,
In confession of your unfriendly sins.
I let out a sigh of frustration and relief,
But I must say I have a belief.
I don’t know what it is right off the bat,
But you still seem to be snarling at me like a rabid rat.
Your neglect, it hurts so much,
I feel your hands holding my heart in a painful clutch.
Today you whisper that you’re sorry,
But that’s hard to believe, and I worry.
You act, sound, look sincere,
But I still can’t believe you’re saying what’s real.
In the end, we’re the best of friends,
And I just have to grasp, that this friendship has some bends.
