Free Verse To My Dearest Friend Poem by John Whitfield

Free Verse To My Dearest Friend

Rating: 4.5

I admit, I'm over you, but we can still be friends.

I gave my all, my body, soul -
my very mind -
my heart with every pressured beat -
and let myself grow into love
though unrequited from that first wet, torrid night -

But, I am over you and we can still be friends.

You gave your all, your body, soul,
your very mind -
your heart with every varied beat
full-knowing how you really felt, or may -
and let yourself avoid true love
because you could from that once fated day -

Yet, I’m over you though we still can be friends.

You could not say what love you showed -
it was the best -
I shared as if there were no end
full-knowing that you gave your soul to me
but let your heart remain untouched
until you, satisfied, could set it free.

Ah, yes, I'm over you though we are still good friends.

I could not say in words what raged -
it was the worst-
as love poured into empty net
still-knowing how much more I had to give
to let you reach those aether heights
where you and I in love could live.

But, no! I'm over you. We are still greatest friends.
