To fall
From giddying heights
Hurtled
Hurtled through immense depths and
Immense heights
Not by slow motion
Neither fast
But in the middle, as virtue be
From jut to jut
Falling listlessly
As when the corpse oppressed
By a thousand and more ills
And problems
Floats as Moses thrown to destiny
And came to Pharoah unwittingly.
These
These
Thus
The oppressions have so grown
That time was come to call end
Time for the curtains to fall
Time for the fires of the Tragedy
To crackle down
To consummate slow and unresistingly.
I too saw my Bird fall
Seized in seconds into the jaws of death
And Death it was
And Death it was.
And so shall be.
I dispute not nor have the strength.
Down as I was going
I saw below
The hideous bottom
Clearly
But feared not.
No satyr came to console
Nor faun nor nymph
But the Earth rotated still, undisturbed and
Ruthless as I fell, ruthless with pain
More in stark Oblivion
More in abandonment and in solitude than
The sacrifice itself
The Golgotha I have walked.
