Well written. I wish we could convey with words the terrible tragedy of this war and every war. I truly wish that we would see the end of war period.
I have read extensively about WWI and still cannot 'comprehend' (don't know what word to use) how many thousands died from all the countries involved and the senseless way in which they were killing each other.
Survivors return home broken men (So many never came back.)
Young men by the thousand died.
A foreign field their final bed
In Flanders fields the poppies grow.
The soil enriched by their hearts blood (flooded with blood)
What have we learnt we did not know? (Yes, what have we learned?)
Nobody won Nobody could.
There are no winners none at all
except perhaps the carrion crows
They dine well when the soldiers fall
as mighty nations come to blows.
Your words are so true. I hope the lesson is learned some day.
