Get Me From The Hangman Poem by The Poet Darkling

Get Me From The Hangman

Come get me from the hangman
steal me from his gallows of wood
Shine a light in the darkness
Remove from my head this black hood

Take the noose from ‘round my neck
Lay me down in a field of gold
Wrap my body in velvet
Pray for my soul before it's sold

Pay the boatman his two pence
Just lay the coins upon my eyes
Then dig the hole, six foot deep
A lonely grave under gray skies

Place on my lips one last kiss
Scatter sweet flowers all around
Close me up in my casket
Lower me gently in the ground

Gather my friends and neighbors
Sing a song as you bury me
Carve a headstone for my grave
To mark the spot where I will be

Once my body's in the ground
My final wishes carried through
Then go away and leave me
There's nothing more that you can do

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Ever notice how in the old Westerns you always see the body hanging in the galows or from a tree but you never see them removed and buried? How sad...their debt has been paid with their death but they never get a respectful burial...Well with this poem I wanted to bury just one...
