I longed to earn in righteous ways;
I worked quite hard but that didn’t pay;
I cried to God to help me face,
the troubles coming, night and day.
Yet, strife came frequently in life,
And stole the hope I nurtured long;
Oh, should I turn to worldly ways?
The question vexed my heart and soul.
If heaven was my only goal,
I could not follow evil ways;
If God was watching me suffer,
Why didn’t He help me when I prayed?
I got the answer in due course –
God need not do the things we ask;
He knows what things are best for us –
We earthlings cannot comprehend!
I held to God with all my might;
Nothing in life then gave me fright;
I tried to see with divine sight;
My problems kept becoming light.
My life is now an easy task;
My soul is purer, nearer God;
God gives me everything I ask;
My soul is tuned to serve the Lord!
’Tis God who gives us every breath,
and helps us live our lives on earth;
We ought to put our trust in God,
And thank Him for His unique love.
