Grandfather Poem by Jamina Tevilili

Grandfather

I remember
When he was a young man
He followed the gold
Deep in a mineshaft
All muddy and cold
Deep in the dark
With a flickering light
The morning were silver
The sunsets were gold

I remember
The merry days back then
His raven hair and lean face
Held passion pain and strength
I remember
He had the craftsman's hand
Fashioned for its deeds
The hand rolled slim cigarette
Placed between his lips

I remember
The sun turning to flame
And the sky above arched green
The impersonal downfall
And eternity's kiss
To no man's land
I remember too
The weeping child
And the empty crimsons
Laid upon his grave.

The poet has done a very fine sketch of her grandfather- so graphic and so poignant. The words are emotionally surcharged.
