Gratitude Poem by Kayci Lamb

Gratitude

i broke my back lifting a daisy
i lay all day in bed and rest
eyes so heavy they're wide open
at least i am not alone:

my back brace has bones and flesh
fingers wrap around my spine,
lifting me up.

my body weighs more than a plant
somehow sinew and joints bring
me up.

in the last vestiges of my body
these veins and arteries blend
into my own.

when my back is to bare its own
inside the marrow blooms
strength.

i wish i could be made of daisies
instead i am bones and sinew and
veins and healing.

(i have blood now
i have a pulse now
i am never
on my own)
