Hacken
'To hoe' and 'to hack'
are the same to the Deutsch,
so with too much to lose,
they sought gentler ways
to harvest their beets,
which they love
to call Schrauben or screws.
They screw them out,
sie schrauben sie ab;
or, sie schrauben sie los,
spazieren die Reihen entlang
und ziehen die Schrauben aus,
they loosen the screws,
walk the rows
and pull those beetroots out.
