Half A Pie - Poem by Peter Bain

I was sitting at her table
She was giving me my tea
I was fidgeting in anticipation
For what awaited me

I was feeling rather hungry
She quickly set my place
It was going to be delicious
I saw it in her face

She brought it to the table
But I was stunned and totally surprised
Aghast at the sight before me!
My enthusiasm promptly died

I wondered, had she no money?
Was she just being tight?
Half a poxy Fray Bentos
Definitely wasn't right

I blurted out a comment
'What the hell is this? '
Her face expressed confusion
As I smugly took the piss

She committed a pie sacrilege
Engaged in a culinary sin
Serving up half a Fray Bentos
Disrespecting the mighty tin

'What a cheek' I mumbled
Then smiled and started to laugh
I sensed her quiet relief
As I consumed the pitiful half

She realized it was only a windup
She smiled and let out a sigh
But she learned a necessary lesson
It's a whole Fray Bentos Pie
