He Told Me What To Think Poem by Caren Krutsinger

He Told Me What To Think

He told me what to think.
I thought he was kidding
Threw back my head and laughed
Not realizing he did not joke

He gave me a list of rules
I tore them up and danced in them
Spinning them into the air with my sandals
Smiling at my confidence
Unaware he was fading away
Unconcerned about it also

He gave me one last chance
I could not stop laughing
Thinking he was joking
He began to pout, but I did not see it
I was too busy living to notice

His mother came by and gave me a stern warning
She was part of his unconventional weird plot to woo me
I spun out of their reach quickly, running away with my dogs,
Never caring to see either of them again
Loving my truth, enjoying my "me" self.

Ignoring not only his pouting attitude, but
Disregarding him with little effort
Annoyed by his rules and his
insane ways of trying to make me less.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I deal with women who allow men to tell them how high to jump, what direction, and control them with their pouting attitudes and mean ways. I try my best to help them realize they are people also.
