He waited, waited, waited
Till the harsh sound the sexton with harsh sound
Closed slow and sure the church door
After in that church the silence increased
After in that church the dark increased
And struck, struck, struck
The clock of the sacristy and ticked
Slow and drawled the pendulum
Of sudden Light in church dark burst
And danced pale figures whose pale
Shadows floated shadows fluttered
Silent in that aura pale
Of the pale church, in those pale times
And affrighted ran he to the church door
At the pale edge of light in that pale night.
