Hearts On Altar Poem by Chukwuebuka Adebayo

Hearts On Altar

HEARTS ON ALTAR

(On Joy's Wedding)
May 22,2021

Bring your burning spark, (i)
And i'll open the core of my coal;
I'm your dear friend to lean on---
Let flickering tongue of love shineforth
Before this altar, where is sister joy?
Do you like Brother Bankole in his suit?

He's got a secret you won't believe (ii)
He's coming to water a flower in your house;
And will dwell there and live there forever
You just won it----You are the lucky one;
But I still don't know how nor even why---
Why a man when happy will cry his happiness?

Why a lady worship a man in good hands? (iii)
Or when you don't have even much---
But you are always ready to give?
Or have enough and need one to take?
Seems that's the perfection lovers seeks;
To be simple and live as close to the earth.

For a simple love's the true love (iv)
Just like as those two old birds;
Sitting in the coldest tranquility of a tree;
Those kids cooking mess in the garden;
Happy as wind and its breeze in your hairs,
Free as them dancing up and down the sea.

Come those who are willing, (v)
As we set down these hearts----
Down upon this altar of love;
And pray it glow as they grow,
Strong as stones in the wall,
Hold as hand of sand to a rose.

Go walk up holding hand in streets (vi)
Everything will turn good in that way;
Stroll round when the last rain is gone
To feel the deepest warmth of Ondo's sun;
Calling names, anywhere, to give a big hug and a kiss.
For that's how sweet memories are made.
