Her Poem by Nick Napolitano

Her

The first time I took her out we went to a show. Her friend said she was a little shy, but shecame up on stage for me. I can remember when I got hurt and she was there. She helped me with my wound and she told me to call her later. We had dinner later that night and the two sticks next to me weren’t the only crutch in the room. The next morning my high school life was done, and she saw me leave it. She called me up a couple of days later, said she wanted to have breakfast with me. I was so stupid to forget my wallet, but she was so sweet to not care. She invited me to her friend’s party, so I couldn’t say no. Towards the end she wanted to walk, so we strolled on the board walk. That’s when I got the courage to ask her out. I took her out to see a movie, but it was sold out, my luck changed when she thought of another theater, and we had a great time. About a week and a couple of dates later your mom made me dinner and I talked to your dad. Your sister thought I was cool and your brother like me too. We walked that night on the beach and she showed me a trick or two. The next day I took you out to a party, and I really showed you off. All the guys thought you were hot and the girls said you were great. I took you home and you said you didn’t really enjoy yourself, I apologized. The next day we went out to surf, then grabbed a bite to eat. We came back to your place and walked your dog on the beach. We sat on your porch on that warm summer night. It was like something out of a movie and that’s when I kissed you. At first it was wonderful to feel your lips, i felt so happy that i thought my heart was going to stop. then a sense of awkwardness filled your porch, and you pulled away slightly. You told me before that you didn’t have much experience with intimacy, but I had seen my share. So I guess I came on a little strong, and to that I apologized. I didn’t hear from you till two days later, and we went for a surf. I asked you if you wanted to hang out that night and that’s when I saw the expression on your face. She didn’t look sad but she didn’t look happy. She looked like she had something to say. She told me that she wasn’t sure if it was working out and I asked her why. She told me that we were too different. My heart broke and my stomach turned. That’s when I thought in my head what went wrong, but it just brought me back to where I am. So what went wrong?
