Her Black Kettle Poem by Marilyn Lott

Her Black Kettle

She had a big black kettle
Her folks gave her in 1948
This 10 gallon kettle was one
Her father had before that date

Asked never to leave it outside
Because it would rust away
She found so many uses
For the kettle each and every day

For making lye soap it was perfect
Because the kettle was so big
Water boiled was a terrific way
Of scalding the hair off a pig

The kettle was also used
For pickling of the beets
Then putting them in the cellar
To open in the winter to eat

The kettle was used for washing
The clothes on weekly wash day
Along with other galvanized tubs
It was NOT the easy way

She’s used it as a flower pot
Can’t you just see the sight?
Brimming over with color
In her black pot would be just right

And now this beautiful lady
Will give the black pot away
To a museum for us to admire
The perfect home for it to stay!
