History Lesson Poem by Justin Kopp

History Lesson

The crack of the ice tray,
Two cubes in a paper cup
No clean glasses, no clear urgency
Warm whiskey and tap water
Sherwood Anderson and marijuana
Another quietly interesting night to myself with the world
I can see the essences of history
A universe is vast in comparison but no more impressive
To withstand and understand time is a rare breed
The forgotten stories of the dead scream louder now than ever before
Only for being known so well
