Homage To Updike Poem by Shalom Freedman

Homage To Updike

HOMAGE TO UPDIKE

For so many years we have had.
The angular elegance of your lines
The fine metaphoric precision
Eye for the everyday
The infinite variety in translating
The ordinary American Landscape
To Literature.

Man’s time is short
And all must die
But some deaths
Deprive us more
Of the new Beauty
We so long for and need.

Go gently great writer,
To your Eternal End-
The Arts in America
Have lost their best Friend.
