Five icy beasts,
Steam rising up from their backs
And from their curious noses,
Bright-eyed and quizzical,
Greet me and nudge one another,
Bob their heads and bite.
They duck and swing their haunches around and pause
Threatening each other,
But with nothing more than play.
Now and then they stop to stare at me,
And they draw closer,
Breathing merry puffs of steam,
Ears and eyes welcoming,
With childlike friendliness
Interest
Innocence
And all I can do is stare back.

I think this is beautiful - you really get the phsyicality of the horses right - but you haven't ended it yet. There's something better waiting to be said, I think.
