House On A Vanished Mountain Poem by Robert Rorabeck

House On A Vanished Mountain

Can you remember the sky is blue
When I looked into your eyes,
That faded gaze a blind man gives
A house on a vanished mountain.

A naiad dries a tear and pulls back a
Dress if waves.
There is nothing in it but the sound
Of spoons clapping onto empty graves
And skeletons looking out from their
Vanished room.

See all of the sunlit shafts
Splintered amidst the trees' amazing columns.
A classroom here, ethereal—
Bespeaks the end of all corporeal nations

Where eagles return to thought
And children in utero holding their breathes
Study the canals of metamorphosis
Swim in schools in golden caves—
Where wings enfold a tiny sea—
Your eyes shining across a classroom
I have forgotten.
