How? Poem by Lydia Thacker

How?

How do I express rage at your goneness?

It piles in crystal drifts around me,
suffocating with its vacuum state.

How do I express rage at your ghost?

I am haunted by your memory,
but you refuse to be seen.

How do I cry out to god?

She was not yet ready to join the wild hunt!
How could you allow her threads to be cut so soon?
-Without even warning me...us...

Lightning strikes with less effect
than the sudden halting of a heart such as hers.

She was finally happy again.

We had 'our baby' and she was whole.

How do I sing of crushed hopes?

Bitter remnants counterpointing
a once joyous canticle...

I go flat and my voice fades,
replaced by the softly moaning wind
and the patter of teardrops falling
on my baby's upturned face.
