How Can This Be? Poem by Ashley McBean

How Can This Be?

Rating: 4.5

How can this be?
Last night I was in a cozy bed,
my family was right upstairs.
I was safe and secure in my haven,
I was happy with what I had.
I was happy to be sixteen.
Yet this morning when I wake,
I am in a very strange place.
I'm weak and cannot move,
A strange woman -not my mother-
Comes into my room.
I try to speak but don't utter a word.
I catch a glimpse of my skin
and touch it with my hand.
My skin is dry and clammy,
What do I do now?
I feel my life washing away,
like rocks in a river.
I feel helpless now.
My life is ending,
Quicker than it began.
How can this be?
