How Can You Replace? Poem by Elise Colon

How Can You Replace?

They come.
They'll be with you for awhile.
They will share your old memories and create new ones.
You know them, you like them.
They stay.
They help you along through troubles, but hurt you along the way.
You forgive, learn, and grow attached.
They look at you and say they won't ever go away.
you believe them, you love them.

Change comes your way.
They made a promise that trapped you in a cage...
They cannot keep you.
They leave.
Gone, gone. They walk away.
They came, they stayed, but not forever.
They fall far out of sight.
They erase you from their mind.
A distant memory is where you lay.
A tear falls down your face.
How will you ever replace what cannot be erased?
