Humanity Poem by Dhayveed Eno

Humanity

Once there lived a tall, lean chap
He was dark, frail and very old.
He was kind as a man should be
And a lie they say he never told.

He lived at the very top of the hill
Where the apple tree once stood
He had no gold, no bread, no wine
But he never begged for food

No man had ever seen him frown
No man even knew his age
For his life was like a big old book
Which was empty on every page

Some said he was as old as time
So said he wasn't born
Some said he earned immortality
For the celestial battles he won

But not all loved the good old chap
For many slandered his name
They claimed he drank the thick, red blood
Of the lamb which was slain

Now famine had struck the land
And who do you think they blamed?
Yes, twas the good old man
They said held back the rain

And so the old man sat to laugh
At how foolish they could be
"Your holy sins has vexed the gods
And now you dare curse me? "

Filled with anger rather than hunger
The guards took him at night
They say he never begged for mercy
Neither did he try to fight

His head they laid on the slaying stone
And beckoned for his last words
But he smiled back at the frowning guards
As they drew forth their silver swords

Swoosh! It went, the good old blade
Which for once had never failed
But now had failed to kill this man
Who wasn't guilty as they claimed

The man stood up to dust his clothes
"You can't kill me with a lie "
He told the crowd with much morale
"What wasn't born can't die "

A kind old chap of which he was
He held no human grudge
He prayed for them to the all the gods
He prayed for rain, he prayed for grain
But asked not a penny unto his name

When all was done, hunger had gone
The people gathered round his home
"Oh good old man, oh good old man
Tell us your name we plea
That we may sing and chant your name
For all eternity "

The old man replied...
"I have neither a name nor the right
To ask all these of you
But my name is that which starts and ends
With everything that is true,
Do good at night, do good at day
Let love and passion lead your way
Tell no lies and bear no grudge
And remember, who are we to judge?

A still peace filled the room
As everyone's eyes were shut to pray
But those eyes opened in awe and shock
For the man had gone away.
His clothes lay on the floor,
His staff leaned by the door,
Who he was and where he went
No one knows till this hour.
