I Am Poem by Dominique Shanise

I Am

Rating: 5.0

I Am Human
but not by choice
I was but I wasn't born with my own voice
I live in America
The Land Of The Free
but how are we free
when not all of us see
The true glory of freedom in U.S. Society
Not only are we blinded by lies
we are taught young not to see with our own eyes
You say all lives matter and if that's true
why are you not yelling for black lives too
yeah all lives matter
but black blood splattered across sidewalks
on living room walls
in front of our children
and on bathroom stalls
Blood stained roads
only our memories to hold
Every story to be left untold
Tell me why America
Do wanna end my race so cold
I Am young
teenage african american girl with broken dreams
seen more tragedies
in my reality
then shakespeare or Poe ever wrote
Tell me if red and blue would be flashing
3 minutes, hours, or years after my heart rate started crashing
fading to black and my curtains closing
but im not afraid of the dark
Stay away from the light
A million tiny whispers then I fade into the night...
