I Am A Volunteer Poem by Brett Hopkins

I Am A Volunteer

I sit at home
Playing with the family.
The tones go off, I grab my gear
Not sure of the calamity.

Is it a car wreck, a trauma,
A medical call, a fire?
Is someone trapped or sick,
Is the fiery dragon raising its ire?

Will I be the tech, the attack crew,
The truckie, or the engineer?
I have many roles and they change everytime,
I am a volunteer.

Whatever role I may have,
I pray to God to be the best I can.
Please God Almighty,
Put the skills I need in my hands.

Will I save a life, a house,
Keep someone from falling?
This is not a hobby,
This life is a calling.

In this life I have been overjoyed,
I have also cried.
No matter what happens from this point on,
No one can say I haven't tried.

I do my best,
To make an impact.
I am a volunteer,
That is a fact.

I've held sick babies,
And old ladies hands.
I've watched life dissipate,
Vanish, leave this land.

I've cut victims
Out of cars.
I found an Autistic child,
That ran away far.

I've saved some homes,
And watched others burn to the ground.
At the end of the day,
I'm blessed with this life I've found.
