I Am Too Old /To Make Up Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Am Too Old /To Make Up

I AM TOO OLD / TO MAKE UP

I am too old
To make up
For years of self- delusion.
How can I begin again
When my life is almost over?
I have fought for a dream
But I did not fight in the right way.
I gave my life to writing
But I did not write carefully enough.
I have so much to do
And not enough time and ability to do it.
So I was another one of the millions
Who tried and was not good enough.
Now in the years left
What can I do
So that I and my wife
Do not end up
In complete poverty and humiliation?
