I Am What? Poem by Mohammad Younus

I Am What?

I am what?
How do I describe myself—
I know I am what I am.
I am a form of the formless,
A time born of the timeless.
But what is this I-Am?
I don't know.

I wear the veil of shape,
I walk within a frame.
I hold strange powers in my hands,
Yet who is this I-Am?
I have never seen.
What is this I-Am?
I don't know.

I cannot trace my dawn,
Was I not shaped by eternity?
Or did I drift from pre-eternity's shore?
I cannot say for sure.
But what is this I-Am?
I don't know.

I am the pulse of emotions,
The burning of passions.
I am memories uncoiling,
Dreams rising and folding.
But what is this I-Am?
I don't know.

I echo in every breath,
Yet vanish when I seek.
I linger in the silent spaces,
Yet slip away when grasped.
What is this I-Am?
I don't know.

Let me carry this question,
Though no answer may come.
I am what I am—
A ripple in the vast unknown.
But what is this I-Am?
I don't know.
