I Am Who I Am Poem by James Cheek

I Am Who I Am

Sometimes I cry, though not too often,
I laugh quite a bit, maybe too much,
I’m very stubborn, so my head needs to soften,
But I try my best to take advice, and such;

I’m trusting, but don’t cross me, my friend,
If you do, you must earn back my trust,
I don’t look forward to my inevitable end,
But I never, about it, make much of a fuss;

I try to be polite to any people I meet,
Though I have met people to whom it’s hard to be polite,
There have been times when I took a quiet seat,
While knowing I needed to stand up and fight;

I have considered situations, and made decisions,
More than once have I made the wrong one,
I make an effort to conserve my provisions,
Sometimes I look around and they’re gone;

But I am who I am, nothing more, nothing less,
And the same goes, dear reader, for you,
Stay steady, be strong, always do your best,
And always to yourself be true.
