I Am Your Mirror Poem by Mohammad Younus

I Am Your Mirror

I am your mirror,
And you are mine.
In my glass, you see your truth,
In yours, I find my own.

Your beauty, when praised,
Is but praise for my own—
Your mirror holds my face.

When you say to me,
'You are beautiful, '
You glimpse your own radiance
In the silver of my glass.

A mirror does not lie,
Nor can it deceive.
It reveals the seer—
As you are, it will show.

Yet in the mirrors around me,
I witness how far I've strayed
From God's dream of me.
I am a heart in exile,
Far from the star
I once was in eternity.

The weight of this knowing
Wounds the false self—
More than the illusions
That led me astray.

Illusions collide,
Dripping, fresh, still purple—
I turn from their path
And walk toward the light.

I dream of memories long buried,
Of my pure nature,
Dimmed and lost in shadows.
Darkness veiled the sky,
And I forgot to see.

Now, in the mirror, I am ashamed.
I must wash this face—
Ablution in light,
To become as I was
In the beginning.

I no longer hear the wind
That once carried Your scent,
Nor taste the sweetness
Where I once found myself.

I curse the days
I sought salvation elsewhere—
In spirits not my own.

I return to the promise
Made on the day of Alast—
When I stood without shadow.

In my true self, I will find
The longing that stirs the world awake.
Where do you seek embrace
To rediscover who you are?

Look within.
Your essence waits for you.
