I and the Village (Marc Chagall)
By William He
Green hues reflect on water,
Where shadows gather and linger,
Thoughts drift and fall.
Memories circle back,
Dreams linger in the village,
Meeting the gaze of milch goat.
Church stairs lead into the clouds,
In the flowing lights,
Stars hang like legs.
Hair roots tangle,
Trees entwine with threads of emotion,
Above and below, an inner enchantment once.
Flowers bloom on the Ewe's smiling cheeks,
A crescent moon hangs at the turn,
Pine needles glow with bright.
Rivers pulse with life,
Time turns in cycles,
Feminine whispers and crisp piano notes.
Fish swim through the skies of childhood,
Scales shimmer,
Colorful waves churn.
Old faces glow in the village mirror,
Reality and illusion float together,
A strange and wondrous painting even.
