I Catch The Great Thief... Poem by Mohammad Younus

I Catch The Great Thief...

I catch the great thief...
...of my heart's treasure...
...my evil nafs!
Who commands me to evil;
I tie shackles around his neck!
I lock him up in the prison cell!
I handcuff him!
I put iron fetters on his legs! ;
I thrash him with hard whips!
Until he grows weak and submits.

Then I take pity on him...
...and free him from the prison cell...
...when he submits to Allah at last...
...and vows to be a true Muslim;
But, daily he breaks the covenant...
...and daily I say to him the word of Islam;
I swear to Allah that I'll never...
let him go free.
