I do not know why I am so lonely tonight
Perhaps it is the fear of the second operation
I today learned I will have to have
Perhaps it is the silence of an empty house
My wife gone out for the evening
Perhaps it is all the uncertainties of the future
Or the news that a beloved friend fell in her home twice today
And perhaps too it is the tiredness at the close of a long day
I cannot say for certain
But I am as lonely tonight
As someone who has already left the world
And does not know
He will never come back.
