I Guess I Did It Poem by Taylor McKnight

I Guess I Did It

In grade 1 we wanted to be 10.
Be the big kids of the school
Be tall
Be leaders,
Be able to wear cool senior jumpers.
In grade 3 we wanted to be teenagers.
To be able to stay up till 10pm,
To be able to drive a car
To be able to go out whenever to get McDonald's.
By grade 5 we wanted to graduate.
To go to high school,
To get our own lockers,
To get different teachers for different subjects.
By grade 7 we wanted to be sixteen.
Go to parties
Get drunk
Get a job.
But by grade 9 we didn't want to be around anymore.
The stress became too much,
You didn't know who your true friends were,
Teachers yelled at you for handing late work up.
We just wanted to get out of high school as fast as possible
But by grade 12
It was all over,
The year went so fast.
Dreams of driving a car in grade 3 became realistic
Dreams of going to parties in grade 7 became memories we would never forget
Dreams of graduating in grade 5 were happening right now
This was it.
I just wished I didn't wish for the future and enjoyed that moment in grade 5 when everyone was friends and played chasing together.
I wished I enjoyed that moment in grade 2 when everyday was a great day.
I wished I enjoyed that moment in grade 7 when I stressed about doing work instead of going out to parties
I just wished I could go back and enjoy the small things in life, because little did I know. It would be over before I knew it.
