I Have Been What I Can Be Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Have Been What I Can Be

I HAVE BEEN WHAT I CAN BE

I have been what I can be
It is probably not good enough.
Can I be something else now
In my old age?

Old men should be young
But they’re not.

I’ll go on as I go on
Until I can’t go on

Can I now do
What have I tried to do
Countless times in the past
Reinvent myself as greater?

I doubt it.
