I Know I Could Not Work Poem by Mohammad Younus

I Know I Could Not Work

I know I could not work,
Until my brain told me to.
But who tells my brain
To make me act, except me?
I know my body could not walk,
Until my brain commands each step.
Yet who moves the brain
To move the body, except me?

I know my eyes could not see,
Until my brain grants them sight.
But who bids my brain
To make them open, except me?
I know my ears could not hear,
Until my brain makes them listen.
Yet who prompts the brain
To hear the world, except me?

I know my tongue could not speak or taste,
Until my brain gives it voice and flavor.
But who instructs my brain
To do so, except me?
Thoughts, feelings, and impulses—
Born from the brain.
Yet who whispers to the brain
To think, to feel, to know, except me?

Who am I?
A hidden secret, undefinable,
Inexplainable!
A paradox—a cause and effect both!
Only this I know:
I am I.
My name is 'I Am.'
