I'Ll Drink My Whiskey Straight Poem by Sara Turner

I'Ll Drink My Whiskey Straight

Rating: 5.0

You're wearing down my resistance
No matter how hard I fight
You snagged that little piece of me
That unravels me at night

I feel your arms around my waist
As your lips caress my hair
But I pull away avoiding you
Afraid to show I care,

You grab my hand and tug me in
Tight against your chest
I struggle with you just a lil' bit
Convinced that I know best

Chorus:
Tonight I'll wash away the feel of you
With whiskey and a beer
And somewhere in a crowded bar
I'll drink away my tears

I'll force your voice out of my head
Pretend you don't exist
I'll dance with strangers in the night
And drink away the risk

Swaying to the beat of the music,
In the arms of a faceless man
And drink another whiskey straight
Just because I can

And I'll smoke a pack of cigarettes
before the night is through
Shutting out your image
Afraid to think of you

Chorus:
So tonight I'll wash away the feel of you
With whiskey and a beer
And somewhere in a crowded bar
I'll drink away my tears

I can't get past this drowning feeling
And I know I might be wrong
But you won't find me by tomorrow
'Cause I'll drink these feelings gone

Powerful. Flows well and rhymes come off natural, unforced. Sing-songy feel lends an ironic contrast to the dead-serious subject matter. Nice work.
