I'll Tell You What I See Poem by Nika McGuin

I'll Tell You What I See

I see León,
León, Nicaragua
I see me
amidst a whirlwind
of self discovery
surrounded by
brown children
and tarnished
colonial architecture

I see me,
living a life
care free & bold
I see me,
breaking the mold
of what I've been told
I'm expected to become

I see me,
breaking free!

Congratulations! This poem is a breakthrough poem. I'm sure of it. It might be the beginning of a series of poems that probe some dark corridors of your mind that have need of illumination. Your previous poems have had flashes of such light but this one is completely and consciously devoted to illumination. I don't want to make you self-conscious: Poetry works best as an undercurrent. The poet goes about her life, spreading joy and love, receiving the same from others, and expressing her best and most incisive thoughts in her poems, and that undercurrent rushes through her life, her laughter and tears, her quiet and boisterous moments, and most especially her poems, and the light seems brighter and stronger and she discovers it'scoming from inside her! ! THERE that's a preview of what to expect. I get these ideas once every three or four years - so I have to be grateful and share them.
