I See The World In Words Poem by Laurence Overmire

I See The World In Words

I'm a poet, you see
Or perhaps you don't

(Everyone hates poetry I'm told)

Nonetheless
I see the world in words:
The tree is statuesque
The soil is nourishing
The air is essential
The water is purifying
The fire is cleansing
You are inquisitive
My friend there is enigmatic
And me? I am nothing
But a sigh that dissolves
In a split second of unsubstantial
Thought

I believe in the best words
The positive words
The words that speak truth
And make all the best of life
Possible:
Kindness, forgiveness, understanding
Sympathy, compassion, empathy
Trust
Faithfulness, honesty, integrity
Honor
Generosity, sacrifice, friendship and
Respect

And if there is one word that
Encompasses all of these words
And brings them all together
That one word is love

Love is the biggest word I know
For what it contains can not be
Contained
Others try to mock it to diminish
Its power
As they wield their hammers of
Destruction and despair
But love always triumphs
Stands true against the onslaught
The noblest of any endeavor that
Has ever been conceived

So if a word can bring you any
Comfort
If a word can heal the pain in
The bleakest of times that seem so
Unrelenting
Wrap your mind around love
And you may find what every human
Has embraced and ignored and hated
And cherished, despised and welcomed
Under the same waning moon
The same turbulent sky
The same exuberant, life-affirming
Dance

The joining of hands
That makes us all
One.
