I Shall Survive And Put On A Smile. Poem by Sara Hol

I Shall Survive And Put On A Smile.

A heaviness overcomes my heart
causing my mind to wander.
I feel the need to stay strong
but my burdens cause my body to quiver.

The love I carry seems to deflate
as memories swarm my existence.
I cannot feel my hands anymore
as my skin grows cold.

I coax myself to pretend
that I am happy,
but my heart knows the pain
I carry.

I gather my tears
and throw on a smile,
to prove to the world
that I can handle what life
has thrown at me.

I know the future holds many dreams
that I can obtain
as long as I do not allow the pain
to overcome my sanity.

I will refrain from living in the negativity
that everyone else basks in,
make myself enjoy the little things
and try to acquire some deserved happiness.

The pain may live inside of me
and the feelings may remain,
but I have survived the darkest hours
so far,
and I shall survive my darkest days.
