I, The Crown Poem by Sea Willow

I, The Crown

Give and take
I've been told that's how
It's supposed to be
The tide pulls back only to push back in

I am big enough to admit
Truthfully too much so
That I pulled the rope
All the way to my side

I pull more and more
My arms growing sore
Until I'm left with two weathered ends
And it's clear the two cannot be mended

Now I have far too much
Nothing to do with this pile of gold
My body sits upon as its crown
But the crown is the dullest of all that shine

Every soul warned me
Of the dangers of selfish desires
Yet how could I listen?
My mind appears to have found a megaphone

There is nothing left at the other side
I toss a coin as if it's good luck
Hoping the tides will decide to turn
But I have screwed over the moon and its precious gravity

Now no gold will appease this other side
Furious storms brew and loom towards me
I'm frightened of the forest fire it's sparked
Hiding under the treasure but metal's not the choice

But the storms cease, the fire dies in embers
And I'm left with all I have gained
But at last, I have lost all
In my pursuit I have persecuted

I am the crown
Of all I scorn
All I hate
Yet here it lays

Still mine
