You were my moon
lighting up the stars
sheltering me from the darkness of night.
And for a while the evenings seemed less lonely
because the moon was there with me.
And then I saw you slip away.
Going slowly, taking the light with you.
Until you were nothing
And the stars and my loneliness were all that remained.
In the light, I see
that my sun merely reflected off your
cratered, cavernous, hollow reflection
I was illumination all along
And I never needed you.
Except to remind me
of my vast brightness.
