I Was Only Three Poem by Darren Harris

I Was Only Three

My name is Darren and I’m only three,
And my eyes are swollen and I cannot see,
I must be stupid and I must be bad,
What else could have made my daddy so mad?
I wish I was good and I wish I weren’t ugly,
Then maybe my mummy would still want to hug me,
I can’t speak at all and I must not do wrong,
Or else I’ll be locked up all day long,
And when I awake I’m sometimes all alone,
Because my mummy and daddy are not at home,
But when mummy is I try to be nice,
Then maybe I’ll get just one smack tonight,
I better be quiet, I can hear daddy’s car,
He’s home from work and Charlie’s bar,
I can hear him curse as he calls out my name,
And when daddy is angry he causes me pain,
So I try to hide from his evil eyes,
I’m so afraid he’ll hear my cries,
But he finds me weeping and shouts ugly words,
He says it’s my fault he suffers at work,
Then he slaps me and hits me and yells at me more,
But I break free from him and I run to the door,
But he’s already locked it so I start to bawl,
As he takes and he throws me against the wall,
I fall to the floor and some of my bones are broken,
As daddy hits me again and more bad words are spoken,
I’m sorry I scream but it’s much too late,
His face has been twisted into an unimaginable hate,
Then more hurt and pain again and again,
Oh please god have mercy, please let it end,
Then he finally stops and he heads for the door,
While I lay motionless sprawled on the floor,
My name is Darren and I am but three,
And tonight my daddy murdered me
